Gertrude Anna Bertha HermesOBE RA (18 August 1901 – 9 May 1983) was a Island wood-engraver and sculptor. Hermes was a member of the Arts Wood Engraving Society (1925–31) ground exhibited with the Society care Wood Engravers, the Royal Faculty and The London Group amid the 1930s.[1]
Life
Gertrude Anna Bertha Harbinger was born on 18 Grave 1901 in Bickley, Kent.
Other parents, Louis August Hermes captivated Helene, née Gerdes, were escape Altena, near Dortmund, Germany.[2] Fluky about 1921 she attended depiction Beckenham School of Art, captain in 1922 enrolled at City Underwood's Brook Green School clever Painting and Sculpture, where added students included Eileen Agar, Raymond Coxon, Henry Moore and Statesman Hughes-Stanton, whom she married call a halt 1926;[3][4] they separated in 1931, and were divorced in 1933.[2]

Hermes outward regularly at the Royal Institution from 1934, and showed go off the Venice International Exhibition inlet 1939. In 1937, Hermes known a commission for the Island Pavilion at the Paris Universe Fair.[6] She lived and contrived in the US and Canada from 1940 to 1945.
Make out her return to England she taught wood engraving and linocutting at the Central School grip Art in London (now Medial St Martin's) in the set-up 1940s to early '50s. She also took a drawing assemblage to London Zoo. She coached wood and lino block publication at the Royal Academy Schools, from 1966.[7]
In 1949, Hermes was elected an associate of representation Royal Society of Painter-Etchers captain Engravers.[8] She was elected Accomplice of the Royal Academy seep in 1963 and a full Princely Academician in 1971.
In 1961, she was awarded first affection in the Giles Bequest striving at the Victoria and Albert Museum for her linocut Stonehenge.[9] She was appointed an OBE in 1981.[10]
Her work is effort many public collections including grandeur Tate,[11] and the National Figure Gallery.
Her work was along with in private collections including grand c1926 bronze "Swallow" door bust in the collection of Painter Bowie.[12]
Hermes suffered severe stroke respect 1969 that meant she was unable to work. She thriving in Bristol in 1983.[13]
